What does the Chrome extension actually do?

You get a price ticker that lives where your attention already is. The extension badge sits in the Chrome toolbar and shows the live Bitcoin price, updated every minute, so you never open a tab just to check the number. Click the icon, or press Alt+Shift+B, and a floating window pops out that you can resize and drop anywhere on your desktop. Inside it you can watch up to five coins side by side, each with its own 24-hour trend line, set price alerts, and see what your holdings are worth right now.

It is not a trading tool and it does not try to be a full portfolio app. It is the desktop counterpart to our mobile widgets: the few numbers you check a dozen times a day, zero tabs away.

Why did we build a browser extension when we have an app?

Because desktop is where most people actually spend their working day, and phones stay in pockets. The Crypto App is used by 5.7 million traders on iOS and Android, and the most common request from people who work at a computer was some version of "I just want the price in the corner of my screen." A pinned tab is a bad answer: it burns memory, it hides behind other tabs, and every refresh is a click.

An extension solves that cleanly. The badge is always visible. The floating window stays on top while you work in a spreadsheet, a terminal or a Discord. And because it is a proper Chrome extension rather than a web page, it can send you an alert even when you have not looked at it in an hour.

We also built it the way we build everything: private by default. No login, no analytics beacons, nothing to sell.

How do I install and set it up?

Is it private? What can the extension see?

Less than almost any extension you have installed. Everything you enter, from the coins you watch to your holdings and your alerts, is stored locally in your browser and never transmitted to us or anyone else. The extension makes exactly one kind of network request: fetching public prices from Coinbase and Kraken.

Specifically, it contains no content scripts, which means it does not inject anything into the pages you visit, and it cannot access your browsing history, your open tabs or your cookies. It requests only the permissions it needs to draw the badge, open its window and fetch prices. Our developer declaration on the Chrome Web Store confirms that no data is sold, no data is used for unrelated purposes, and nothing is shared for creditworthiness or lending decisions.

If you have ever hesitated over a "read and change all your data on all websites" prompt, this is the opposite of that.

How does it compare to the mobile app?

They do different jobs, and they are better together.
